Chronically Mad
June 2008

June in Chicago is a beautiful thing: free movies, music, dancing in the parks; street festivals; sidewalk cafes overflowing with lively chatter and summer smiles. It is now easier than ever to bike, walk, rollerblade, or take the train to your destination.  Where would that be?  To see ½ Mad Poet of course!  Can’t wait to get your fix until the next Poet show?  Check out the Poetgirls sitting in with other musicians at one of the largest Pride weekends in the country or join positive energy for the three day Peace Fest in Lincoln Park.

Stories from the Road
--------------------------------------------------

½ Mad Poet always enjoys playing with Genral Patton and last month’s Peace Fest Benefit was no exception.  We drove up to the aptly named Hideout at the same time as the Genral and his crew was arriving.  Immediately Hippie Tom went to work helping us unload our gear.  When we got inside Buffalo Billy was setting up the food that he had made, the screen printer from the Native American Center was printing cloth flyers on site, and Brian Imig and Maestro Phil were at work directing and managing the stage.  The Genral himself, founder of the fest, made the rounds welcoming everyone and hyping the festival.

It is always inspiring to be around a group of people who believe in the cause of making the world a better place, the support for independent musicians and new music, the belief that small group of people can change the world, and we can.

As each act took the stage, we couldn’t help but be impressed by the diversity and quality of the musical acts from acoustic acts like the powerful pop voice of guitarist Abbi Rejasekhar, the sensual exoticism of Ami Sariaya, the textured folkieness of Summer of Love, the punk energy of Roundeye, and the acoustic rock of Stephanie Vogt and Richard Cranium.  Genral Patton ended the night himself with the usual dexterous high energy performance replete with Mac & Cheese costume and enthusiastic audience participation.  ½ Mad Poet’s set was short and sassy, unveiling a couple of new songs to keep things interesting.

It makes a huge difference playing for a group of people who are bonded by common goals that embrace creativity and diversity versus one who’s only common interests are to have a few drinks and possibly get lucky, not that there’s anything wrong with that.  But it is when you have a collective of bands that have a goal towards the benefit of humankind that you truly feel the power of music.

Don’t Try This at Home
----------------------------------------------------

So you’ve had a few drinks, maybe a few too many, but it’s a lovely night and you’re surrounded by friends, so no harm no foul. When you look up, you see stars, more than you ever see in the city and they seem to be slowly rotating. This is odd so you lie down, just in case it’s you that’s moving. And while you are lying on your back in the dark parking lot watching the stars move, you realize you had a little more than you thought.  This is especially evident when a car starts backing up and you can’t get up.  Fortunately your friends are a little less inebriated than you and help your drunk ass up.  Next time maybe you should lie in the grass…

A BIG Thank You To…
----------------------------------------------------
Thank you to Sean Wiggins, Paul Houston, Genral Patton, Maestro Phil, and the all the other fine musicians who invite us out to play shows and give us opportunities to showcase our skills.  Musicians love performing – the more the better!  Thank you to all our friends and fans who continue to support us and ask, “When’s the next show?”

CODA

----------------------------------------------------

Go outside this summer, leave your cubicle wasteland, your seven circles of servitude, the things that make a living but not a life, go embrace music and diversity and make a difference at least for yourself. So when you go back to the things you have to do, you bring inspiration and a smile with you.
